The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed…
The kingdom of heaven is like yeast…
The parables of Jesus can invite us into engaging conversation about our faith. They help us bring things that otherwise seem to be beyond our language into the very proximity of our daily lives. This unique way of communication captures our imagination. Parables can give us needed perspective on the present as it relates to our hope for the future.
Perhaps Jesus understood well that we need to take notice of the many small things along the way that we can easily overlook. The very promise of God’s presence in our lives is often found in what is inconspicuous and undramatic.
Our life together in the church brings to greater appreciation the steadfast gift of God’s love underneath the daily and common. From a holy meal of bread and wine we are filled with the awareness of God’s mercy ever so close. The gift leads us back into the world ready to celebrate the ordinary and the unpretentious. From there we trust that God brings forth significance and purpose for the well- being of the world!
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
thou my best thought both day and by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. – ELW 793
What are the small things you have noticed lately that hold great promise? How can we help one another perceive the love of God quietly at work among us? What parable might you write that gives expression to your faith?
